Apple to fight Alzhemier's....

Drinking apple juice helped mice deliver above average performances in maze trials, which maintained the same level of mental fitness that was otherwise observed as these mice aged.
Thomas B. Shea, of the Centre for Cellular Neurobiology, University of Massachusetts, and his team showed that mice receiving human equivalent of two glasses of apple juice daily for a month produced less of "beta-amyloid," responsible for forming plaques, commonly found in Alzheimer's disease, said a Massachusetts release.
Shea commented that "these findings provide further evidence linking nutritional and genetic risk factors for age-related neuro degeneration and suggest that regular consumption of apple juice not only can help to keep one's mind functioning at its best, but may also be able to delay key aspects of Alzheimer's disease and augment therapeutic approaches."
The study was published in the January issue of the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

snow snow snow...

please don't get fascinated by the title... it was not what i meant to type...
on jan 26th, 2008... i was on my way to college... George Mason University by car...
I jus realized it started to snow a lil'... and the flurries were coming to c me...

but hey...wait...they drifted away from my car... (ie) it was coming down... when it reached the windshield it started to rise up and go flat over the body of the car...and then go down again..
jus out of curiostiy, wanted to explain the physics behind it... :)  learnt it from my brother..

the basic principle is called.. DRIFT... that is... when a current of when we are piercing through the air.. as the frontbody of the car is at an angle, we cut through the air pockets.. and this makes the flurries to rise up and then travel at the same angle the car is... and once it crosses our car... it tries to reach the ground again...due to gravity...

wow...i love the physics behind it...i hope u did as well...

on jan 26th.. Happy birthday mom n dad....

Happy Birthday Mom and Dad...

Roses

Today is my Dad & Mom's birthday, and I have no gift for them. It's hard to gift people who live far off from me... For the past 3-4 years, I have been getting them gifts from my own money... That was out of a small earning... Now even after earning 1000's of dollars.. I am not in a position to even send them a Greeting card... Shame on me... :(

Cottage

So, I started digging through online postcards to find a nice "Happy Birthday Mom"- or "Happy Birthday Dad"- but bad luck. None reflects what is in my mind..

The roses on the first postcard are because my Dad never buys her flowers- he doesn't have to, he has a beautiful rose garden and all summer my Mom will have arrangements of roses scattered through the house.

The second postcard is to remind them of d beautiful times we as a family spent at a summer lake cottage.

Sailboat

But thanks to all the greeting stores online... I can always send them a card to show my love & affection...

Mom & me

And here we are when I was just a little girl. I sure wish I had saved those boots.... :P

Bluebirds

The bluebirds are just because I found the card as I was rummaging and I thought it was pretty.

So Happy Birthday dear dad n mom !!! I'm glad I am a part of your life..

Top 5 Weekend getaways in India...

From my point of view....

Tired after a week’s hectic work? Feel as though you are in a mad rat race along the alleys of the concrete jungle around you? Do you miss those “quality times” with your family, spouse or your beloved? Time you took a day off and unwound!

Top 5 Weekend getaways in India

1. Lonavala

The first in the list is Lonavala. Lonavala, the jewel of theSahyadri Mountains, is not an unfamiliar name for Mumbaikars. This hill station at a height of 625 mtrs above sea level, in the Pune district is around 100 kms from Mumbai and 64 kms from the city of Pune.

It is famous throughout India for the hard candy sweet known as chikki and is also a major stop on the rail line connecting Mumbai and Pune. Lonavala comes to life during the monsoon season as the countryside turns lush green with waterfalls and ponds. Yet the laidback and peaceful atmosphere offered by this place makes it a weekend destination for any season.

Rajmachi point, Ryewood Park, Tungarli Lake, Valvan dam, Duke’s nose, Karla caves Lohagad fort etc. are the places of interest around this pristine hill town.

Accommodation of every budget is available here.

2. Pondicherry

If you are looking for a laidback, relaxing and refreshing weekend, Pondicherry is the right place for you. Pondy is around 160 kms drive from Chennai and you can reach there is no less than 3 and odd hours if you chose to travel in your own four or two wheeler.  The road to Pondy from Chennai is a scenic highway and you wouldn’t want to miss stopping at those spots where the sea kisses the shore, on the way. Well, there are the regular state transport buses connecting Pondy to Chennai too. Trains to Pondy from Chennai are also available.

The botanical garden, Barathi Park, Chunnambar boat house, Manakula Vinayagar temple, Sri Aurobindo Ashram etc. are some of the interesting places one can visit in Pondy. The Auroville city in Pondy is one place that you should not miss out on.

Accommodation ranging from budget to luxury is available here.

3. Connor

Not very far away from Ooty is this quaint little hill town called Connor. The nearest airport to this destination is the Coimbatore airport which is 90km away and a cab from here can take you to your hotel in not more than 3 and half hours.

This is another place where you can stretch and relax your tired bones and muscles. The climate is what makes the place an ideal place to relax. Connor has interesting places to visit such as – the Catherine Falls, the Dolphin’s Nose, the Droog Fort and the Wellington Golf Course. Also a stroll along the tea plantations holding the hands of your loved ones… Ah! How much better can it get? This is an ideal way to rekindle that flame of passion between the both which you thought got extinguished forever.

The place also offers some of the most sleek furniture sets, linen and a variety of fruit jams, if shopping is something on your mind.

Luxury hotels to estate guest houses are available here for accommodation.

4. Hampi

If you are a resident of Bangalore and sick of the night clubs and parties, longing to spend some quality time with your loved ones away from the maddening crowd of the city, Hampi is the right place for you. Hampi is situated at the banks of Tungabhadra river, 350 and odd kms from Bangalore. The village of Hampi is famous for its historical monuments which are the reminiscent of a glorious past of the Vijayanagara Empire. The demography is abundant with large stones which have been utilized to make larger than life statues of Hindu deities. One can see a structure of historic importance every quarter of a mile. Vijayanagara ruins are listed as the Group of Monuments at Hampi as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you can pack your bags and hit the road early in the morning,  the drive to Hampi wouldn’t take you more than 6 to 7 hours. Well, if you are a little late to start, you’ll have to hold your breath until you can creep through the Bangalore traffic and hit the Tumkur highway.

Hampi never claims of high class accommodation. You can find cheap lodges, guest houses and medium rage hotels to shelter yourself. Or if you are the kind who wants to have it in the out,  get out of town and across the river there are several lovely little places by the riverside along the road and pay next-to-nothing for a hut with patio and hammock, with river views and cows a few feet away.

5. Henry’s Island

Not many people might have heard of this little tranquil place at the shores of the Bay of Bengal. This is a must visit place for people who want to take a weekend break and who are residents of the most densely populated city of India, Kolkata.

Henry Island is a collaborative project of the fisheries dept and private organisation near the well known sea beach of West Bengal, Bakhkhali. Apart from the lonely Bay of Bengal, you can get a touch of great Sundarban here. The view from the watch tower is really mesmerising. If you got a car, Henry’s Island is around 10mins ride from Bakkhali. Else you can avail the rickshaw vans as well.

The two hour ride in the crude bhut-bhuti, a motorised country boat, from Frasergunj fishing harbour to Jambu Dwip, a small, uninhabited and forested island out in the sea, can be a thrilling experience.

There are two guest houses in Henry Island. These lodges belong to the Fisheries Department of West Bengal. Food is available as per the day’s menu of these guest house canteens.

Have you ever fancied stealing a kiss amidst the woods like in one of those Hollywood movies? Well, this is the place for you.

Oscars 2009: Slumdog will have its day

what are you betting on?

Slumdog Millionaire

Make way for the Rocky Oscars, where the losers win out and the underdogs get rosettes. The nominations have been announced and the frontrunners anointed. Favourite for best film is Slumdog Millionaire, a star-free, rags-to-riches fairytale from the slums of Mumbai. There goes punch-drunk Mickey Rourke, slouching towards the best actor award forThe Wrestler. Three cheers for five-time nominee Kate Winslet, all set to make it sixth time lucky for The Reader.

  1. Slumdog Millionaire
  2. Release: 2008
  3. Country: UK
  4. Cert (UK): 15
  5. Runtime: 120 mins
  6. Directors: Danny Boyle, Loveleen Tandan
  7. Cast: Anil Kapoor, Azharudin Mohammed Ismail, Dev Patel, Freida Pinto, Irrfan Khan, Madhur Mittal, Rubina Ali
  8. More on this film

This, at least, is the script as written by the pundits and the bookmakers. What remains to be seen is whether the Academy voters choose to follow it.

If they do, the 81st annual Academy Awards will play out as a virtual karaoke retread of theGolden Globes – which could be the main incentive to go the other way. And quite possibly this is happening already. The shortlist announced this morning broke with Globe form by largely snubbing Sam Mendes's Revolutionary Road (and by association, its stars Winslet and DiCaprio).

It also tossed a few wild cards into the mix. Melissa Leo almost certainly won't win the best actress Oscar for her acclaimed turn in Frozen River, but her presence alone is a reminder that nothing can be taken for granted. Stars will rise and fall over the next four weeks, albeit behind closed doors. Can it be that the likes of Winslet and Rourke have already overplayed their underdog card? It's hard to stay convincing as an against-the-odds hero when the actual odds tell a different story.

For all that, I feel that (right here, this second), Slumdog Millionaire is the clear favourite to take the crowning best picture Oscar. If anything, I think rival nominees Milk and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button are marginally better movies. But Slumdog has the momentum and seems curiously in tune with the tenor of the age. This may be the world's first truly globalised blockbuster; a collage of English and Hindi; world cinema with a Hollywood gloss. Its feelgood nature is another point in its favour. After the cold-eyed nihilism of the last two best picture winners (The DepartedNo Country For Old Men), the Academy will be looking for a change of pace.

For the time being, then, my (entirely illusory) money is on Slumdog for best film and maybe David Fincher for best director. But who do you think will take home the statues on the night of 22 February … and who will be carted out empty-handed, shunned by the limo drivers and left wailing, waiting for their taxi to oblivion?

my sweet granny.....

To sum up, I know her as the sweetest lady on earth. She was a brave fighter and that is how I wish to remember her as.. She loved life and wanted to live as happily as ever with her family. She did not like anybody around her to be sad and neither was she sad. In fact, any cinemas / dramas with sad scenes would be forwarded or the channel changed. Through my mom, I came to know about all the tough times she faced in her life and the steps she took to overcome it...

Now, she is no more. She passed away on September 17,2008 9:25pm at GKNM in Cbe. How I wish I just stood near her along with my family just holding her hand and speaking soothing words to her, telling her that she would come out of it soon and we can be happy after this battle. I hated myself for going home just hours before she breathed her last @ d hospital. She fought till her last breath and she wanted to live. In her last days she suffered so much that none of us could sit near her for more than a few minutes without crying. I cannot understand how God can be so indifferent!!

This is Santha's grand daughter. And I am writing this as a dedication to my lovely grand mother. My grandma suffered from paralysis for almost a year.. When doctors gave up on her in Chennai, our whole family gave her the courage to overcome her stroke, and we made her take the journey to CBE on January,2008. Inspite of the numerous problems she went through, she wanted to live. She never gave up her struggle till the very end as she started walking with the help of a walker during the month of August..We were so confident that she would live. Finally one fine day...she collapsed again, and then we knew...she would/could not recover.. We were counting her last days. Though we knew of a possiblity of death, we all believed that she would win with our support. It is still hard to believe that she is no more.

When I read about this happenning to other people, I feel sad, maybe shed a few tears and move on. But, when something like this happens in my own family, I cannot explain the grief and sorrow that runs through my family.

Love you Santha paati..May your sould RIP...

sudoku... people's life...

hooked on to Sudoku...

From d day 1 The Hindu started publishing Sudoku in their daily papers.. I've made it a policy to solve it first thing in the morning.. My mom was not a gr8 fan of sudoku.. but c how ppl change so fast...She gets up early in d morning (shows am a bit lazy in that case..), and gets her coffee and is totally hooked on this game. But thanks to this site... I get my share of solving 1 puzzle daily..
http://www.websudoku.com/
Its really interesting. And the challenge is to keep reducing the time I take to finish it. I have never been much of a 'crossword' person, but this mathematics is quite demanding...
To those who never do sudoku... Go try it..

its been a beautiful 6 months here...

I had to travel to USA... not as a pleasure trip..but in search of a new career.. and d beauty which lifted me to touch d clouds.. AIRFRANCE...
It was around 10pm i left Chennai on d 8th of August 2008 with a heavy heart.. N much worse..with heavy fever... it was a total mess... didn't inform most of my frnz that i am leaving them for a solid 2 yrs or so !!!

In the airport.. thanks to my cousin..i was atleast trying to stay put.. Then everything changed.. D minute they asked us to board the plane..The service was not bad... and it was no frill airline. My first look at the aircraft and I thought to myself "It looks like a toy!!". Well, to be more precise, this is what I thought "It looks like a bus with wings".. n so is called d airbus...

Anyways, the flight was just about 20 hours...Of which I hardly slept 7 hours..
Not cause of the fear of flight... but coz of my illness... of which the window seat was a blessing in disguise.. :P took a look @ God's creation and man's destructions...
The flight was smoother than my experiences with domestic flights in India..and I understood that's what International rates are about.. :P... A change of airbus at Charles de Guille, France.. Missed seeing the Eiffel Tower... But the airport in France was amazing..
The landing was nervous.. Especially when our flight had to dash through a few clouds to get thro to the Dulles airport in WAS DC.. I had the feeling of all my precious lunch(a slice of dried bread, so called pasta, and some vanilla yogurt) being taken apart... Finally... dream come true... M in US...

But wait... d most important part of my stay for d next 2 yrs rests on this... IMMIGRATION... oh..wat a handsome guy @ d counter.. hope he is impressed with me..n guarantees my stay.. :P
No complaints... No comments.. I came here for my MS.. was all that I had to say... b4 he stamped(with official seal) all my forms... n assured me of my stay in US...
At customs.. an african-american...Do you carry any food stuffs... ??? I had to say... "No..".. what a lie... but it was what he needed and there was no wastage.

N this is the end of my flight to USA... M here...happy n njoyin life...
To my parents and my brother, without whom this dream would ve never come true.. I dedicate this post...
